This caused a huge financial deficit in our clinic. Many indigenous people left their villages with their families or left their own wife and children in Puyo, and drove with flags in trucks to Quito for the protests. Now patients return to our clinic, like this Huaurani woman with knee problems.
In the state health system, indigenous people are not taken seriously and are often discriminated against. The Huaurani are easily recognizable from afar due to the large holes in the ears: it should be recognized as a symbol of beauty of this ethnic group.
